After Captain Ludwig Schlimbach’s internationally acclaimed one-handed voyage from Lisbon to New York in 1937 with STÖRTEBEKER III, it was presented to the public at the A&R stand at the Great Water Sports Exhibition in Berlin in April 1938.
Based on Schlimbach’s experience, its designer Henry Rasmussen had developed the construction plans and building specifications into a building regulation type STÖRTEBEKER, which we have in our possession together with an update.
From the enquiries resulted six building orders until 1959, which are based on the construction of the STÖRTEBEKER III. In addition to individual ideas of the owners, practical experience for the optimisation of the design was also taken into account.
On 17.4.1941, in response to a request from the Hamburg shipowner Erich F. Laeisz, who had eight boats built by A&R in four years, the shipyard prepared an initial offer for the construction of a touring cruiser of the type STÖRTEBEKER in accordance with the STÖRTEBEKER III with a CWL of 7.65m and a length of 10.20m. The basis was the above mentioned building regulation. Mr. Laeisz had reconsidered his requirements and communicated them to Rasmussen, who then further developed the design so that the CWL is 8.00m and the LüA 10.80m. In the fore ship a 2nd berth was created and the superstructure was extended forward. On 6.11.1942 Laeisz received the corresponding offer.
The original documents together with construction drawings were found by chance in a suitcase at a flea market.
